Assignment Overview

You will work with one or two of your peers to write a research paper analyzing how a Greek god or goddess represents Ancient Greek culture.

Objectives

  • Collaborate with your peers to write a four or five-paragraph essay with eleven-sentence body paragraphs.
  • Collaboratively write a closed thesis statement.
  • Collaboratively write introductory and concluding paragraphs.
  • Individually write a well-organized eleven-sentence body paragraph that clearly identifies how a Greek deity represents one aspect of Ancient Greek culture.
  • Vary your sentence structure to include simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
  • Effectively use transitions and conjunctive adverbs to make your writing “flow.”
  • Use formal language to convey complex thoughts.

ELA Common Core State Standards

RI.1.9-10: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
W.2.9-10: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

a.  Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions.

a.  Use a semicolon (and perhaps a conjunctive adverb) to link two or more closely related independent clauses.

b.  Use a colon to introduce a list or quotation.

Essay Prompt

Write a well-developed research paper analyzing how an ancient deity represents the values of the culture from which it came. While reading myths about your deity, you may find it helpful to consider how specific character traits lead to rewards, while others lead to consequences.

Essay Requirements

  • Four to five paragraphs
    • Introduction (the thesis is the last sentence in your introduction)
    • Two or three eleven-sentence body paragraphs (one per group member) with embedded quotes
    • Conclusion (restated thesis is the first sentence in your conclusion)
  • MLA Formatted
    • Typed on white 8.5” x 11” paper
    • Double-spaced with 1” margins
    • 12 pt. Times New Roman (or similar) font
    • Leave only one space after punctuation
    • Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch (do not skip lines between paragraphs)
  • Minimum of three outside sources with in-text citations and a works cited page
    • Minimum of one book
    • Minimum of one website
    • The third source is up to you!
