Beowulf Superhero Project – AP Literature

beowulf_anglosaxon_manuscript_tote_bag

Project Objective

Analyze how both Beowulf and modern day superheroes reflect and embody cultural values by creating a group presentation identifying universal characteristics and themes and connecting those characteristics and themes to the culture from which the superhero originates.

Questions to Answer

You may use any medium to give your presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi, YouTube Video), but you must have a visual aid that clearly answers the following questions:

  1. What are the elements of a superhero? Draw textual evidence from Beowulf to support your explanation.
  2. How does a theme of your superhero mirror one of the themes of Beowulf? Draw textual evidence from Beowulf and from your superhero story to support your explanation (it may be helpful to include a story about your superhero in your presentation).
  3. How does that theme support cultural norms? Draw evidence from your research to support your answer.
  4. Teach your assigned literary element using both Beowulf and your assigned superhero as a model. Give a brief lecture/lesson on the element (make sure you cover all related terms and the writing section), and have your “students” complete a short activity practicing the element. (AP Lit ONLY)
